Stand-up Paddle Down the Don Diego River.

Transport yourself back to Colombia’s ancient, pre-colonial past on a four-day trek to explore the country’s lush, tropical rainforest and learn about the country’s traditional indigenous wisdom.

The Lowdown.

This fun day involves a gentle trek through the tropical rainforest to an indigenous reserve, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and is followed by a thrilling trip down the Don Diego river on a stand up paddle board.

Taironaka is an authentic natural paradise located on the banks of the Don Diego River and on the slopes of the imposing Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

This former indigenous settlement still has trails and terraces of the Tayrona civilization and today is still frequented by its descendants, the Kogui. The reserve will amaze the visitor with its lush flora and offers the opportunity to enjoy a river of crystal-clear waters.

From Santa Marta we travel along the interesting coastal road for about 90 minutes until we reach the shore of the Don Diego River. We walk 20 minutes to reach the Taironaka reserve to take a tour where we visit a typical Kogui indigenous dwelling called a bohío and pre-Hispanic terraces before we arrive at a small viewpoint.

This tour continues by boat to Cacique beach, where we will begin our paddle board activity. The Guide will give us an introduction, focusing on how to manage the boards.

The stand up paddle board trip takes between 2 and 3 hours, during which the guide will tell us about the fauna and flora that can be observed along the way. We will continue until the mouth of the river meets the sea.

Here we will have time to enjoy a swim in the river or in the sea and see a beautiful landscape. We go back to the reserve by boat to begin our return to the accommodation.
